Looked at a "U" today. Not running, looks pretty rough. The guy wants 200 dollars for it. Seems cheap enough. Are there any known weaknesses or red flags I should watch for? Not familiar with these.

It's hard to go wrong spending $200.00 for any tractor. If you can't fix it or don't get around to it you should always be able to get more than that for it or for parts. At least you will be able to get familiar with MMs.

There is a difference in U models. The early years had a 1-piece "jug" and head. Later years were the more traditional "split-block" design (2 cylinders per jug or head). The early; or "K" engine as they are often called; is much less common; does not have the parts interchange ability as does the split block; are a bit harder to find some of the parts common to that design. You can; however; replace the solid block engine with a split. Otherwise: not much difference in overall design from the early 40's until the last ones in 55. (yes there are a few changes in 15 years; not anything drastic)

I'm certainly planning to go see this guy tomorrow to buy it.Would I harm the tractor any by flat towing it behind my truck? It's about 15 miles away.
