I have just brought a 1948 ZTN, I'm wondering if it has the original engine, should the engine and tractor serial # be close? and would a 1948 have a magneto? the tractor number 583783, the engine 83491, anyone knows? Thanks

Didn't take time to check the numbers. I'm sure somebody else will. But yes dad's 1948 ZTU came with a mag. They went to Dist. with the ZA.

The serial numbers usually don't match. Not all engines were put into a tractor. MM also built stationary engines at the same time.

Well thanks everyone that makes me feel better, although it all looked original I thought the engine may have been changed, its nice to know its still original.

Something else someone maybe able to help with, I was looking at buying manuals and some parts I think I was looking at also and they ask if its a late Z, or early Z, some list them up to 1948 or 1948 and up, sounds like 48 there was a change [ like to get the correct manuals ], just not sure which one this would be? and just curious what was change on them?

I think the correct Repair Catalog (parts book) would be R-782L as the print date is 10/47 making it suitable for the coming 1948 models.
