We have a 1947 R that we parade and also plow with. I've adjusted the clutch that it snaps over center like it says in the manual but the clutch is real jumpy. Its a nightmare to load on the trailer. I was told the disc was probably glazed over from not working it but even after we plow it still is the same. Any ideas ? Thanks Jeff

The clutch on my 49 is too. I tried slipping it some and seemed to make it a little better. The next time I go to use it, it's right back to it's old self again. Going up the ramps, I lock it right in until I'm on the deck. I just idle it way down when centering it.

Several thoughts:

1. A loose (worn) engage fork will cause it jerk. When it goes overcenter you can't feather it because of the looseness-The pins on the collar snap away from the load side of the fork all at once. I have seen the fork welded up and the slot re-cut.

2. Also, as I understand them, the steel clutch plate was slightly tapered at the factory so only the outer edge contacted first. Then when it snapped over center and latched in, it became parallel with the flywheel. As the clutch wears more and more lining contacts and it begins to grab. The lined clutch plate in an R may have been wavy like some car clutches are too, for the same reason, so not all the lining contacts at once. Only now, after 60+ years it is pretty much flat now.

T.R.K. is right. Also look all around the flywheel area. Is there any evidence of oil or grease. If any oil is on the clutch facing it will be a jumping jenny. If so take a can of brake clean and try to get as much on the clutch plate as you can. Blow with air, repeat. This might help.
