I have a model U diesel with the 283 engine it has a coolant leak into the oil,I have a good 336 diesel engine out of a jet star it looks like it may fit.Do you guys know if it will bolt in?
thanks for your help

Before you get too carried away, check the weep hole between the water pump and timing cover. If it is plugged with grease and dirt you may just have a water pump seal leaking and going into the engine. Clean out the weep hole and see if you get any anti freeze from there.

The tractor is pretty faded out but there is 5 stars in a circle, and the engine tag has 336D on it,it has a Bosch inline fuel injection pump on it.

If your 283 ran alright and just has water in the oil i would be interested in it if you are close enough. I'm in central il.

I took measurements and it looks to be the same, the bolt holes all match, the oil pan is a little different but it looks like it will fit.

I've had 2 of the 283 diesels that had a cracked jug and would leak water into the crankcase. Any 336 engine will bolt into a U/UB without too much hassle. As for the diesels, the 5 star is the easiest one to do, however. You need to use the U flywheel and the 5 star starter, if I remember correctly. In order for the U flywheel to fit, you'll either have to drill the holes in it for the dowel pins on the crank, or like I did, simply cut the dowel pins off. And, you will have to grind the nose cone of the starter down in order for it to fit into the bellhousing. I had a stock 336 out of a 5 star in a UB Special that I turned the pump all the way up on, and it made 70 hp on a PTO dyno...
