R cylinder head removal

My Father-in-law has a R that the motor is stuck. We are trying to get the cylinder head off(side valve motor I believe) I have all the bolts loose on the studs on the right side. I tried prying between the jugs and head and tried tapping on the cylinder head with a hammer and punch without any results. Am I missing anything/bolts on the left side or do I have to get a bigger hammer? I don't want to wreck anything. (No repair manual cause that's cheating he said) Thanks in advance

They can be tough. I always use a piece of oak and a large hammer. Maybe work both ends and middle too. It's always worked for me.

Repair manuals are not cheating! It is easy to take stuff apart, but they are very nice to have putting back together. Cylinder heads should be torqued to a certain spec in a certain sequence. An I&T book is worth every penny. Heads and blocks come off hard. Odds are the studs are rusty and the gasket is stuck. Snap-On makes some really cool scrapers that can be hit with a hammer. A chisel usually will do the trick too, but they are a little thicker. Start in a corner and try driving it into the gasket to essentially pry them apart. Try not to gouge into the decks. It will come off.

A manual is for a smart person only stupid people do not use them. That said rig up a old spark plug to hook to compressed air. As for being stuck before you pull the head fill the cylinders with ATF and let it sit. Before you fill them make sure it is not full of water because if it is then you going to need a whole lot more to fix it then just pulling the head

Head maybe easy to find but I have been looking to a set of cylinder for one for years and have yet to find a pair that does not cost an arm and leg
