Moline sq. baler

On Tractorhouse auction there is a Moline 760 sq. baler. I never saw one before. How did they design the plunger? It's unlike most other balers.

The plunger was on a pivot near the bottom of the baler and swung in an arc as the rod moved it back & forth. They would make 7 bales a minute if you pushed them. The bales were not very nice to handle unless you used hooks since the cut ends were on the top of the bale. If the knife got dull, it would leave some longer stems that sometimes interfered with the tying of the twine. The first ones had knotters that were mounted very close to the top of the bale chamber. Later New Holland knotters were raised up about 1-1/2 inches & that helped some. The raised knotters that I have seen have all had red hardware for the kit to raise them.

Just to add, other square balers while in operation swayed side to side and a little back and forth, the 760 would mildly bounce up and down with that design.

The 760 was the first centerline baler. Actually quite a good baler except the first knotter version. Keep chains good and it will really bale! Same baler used on Uni's without pto drive.

I agree with what's been said however I think New Idea had the first center line baler, and I was told that it was designed after a European design.

Ive often wondered that about the New Idea baler as well, as I thought they were made in mid to late 1950s. I have a picture of one that was at a threshing show here years ago. I guess only a handful of them were made as they didn't work right. The company had even put a fan from a cornpicker on the back to blow chaff off of the knotters but it didn't help enough. I had read one time that Hesston had to get patent rights from MM for a straight through design baler. I think that was in the late 1970s to early 1980s.

A few pictures of the New Idea square baler design.

My NI literature on the baler is dated 1953. One operators manual for the W6 wire tie baler is dated 4-1-54 and the other one is dated 2-1-55. My MM 760 literature is dated 1-61,. another piece is dated 597.

I have a sales brochure for the New Idea W-5 Wire Tie Hay Baler with print code of 5350-3 on it. Could mean 1953? Also have one for New Idea T-6 and W-6 Balers with print code of 5450-58. John in AZ
