Homestead MM Reunion

I saw on facebook that this was the last year for the Homestead MM reunion. Why are they quitting. I have been there a few times over the 30 year run and always liked the show. Has attendance dropped or is it getting difficult to get people to put on the show. This will be a loss to the MM community.

I was told by one of the leaders that there is not enough help beforehand to put it together. A lot of the older, original people that started it and kept it going are no longer around and not enough interest with the younger generation to keep it going. I always enjoyed going there when I could make it and glad I was able to this year.

That is a shame. It seems a lot of the younger generation doesn't have much interest in anything anymore...unless it is on a computer, an app for your phone or on facebook ;)

I know both of you guys Alan and MM DEL. Make sure that you don't include everyone in the younger generation. As both of you know I am very big into the MM's and farm with them also. There has been a shift in the value of MM's over the last couple of years. People who have deep pockets have been paying out the nose for tractors thus people who are selling the tractors are asking a higher premium for their tractors.

Take for example the famous MM suitcase weights, a guy out west is making new (nice) ones and sells them for $125.00 but yet people still pay $200 for them.

4233 and 4232 heads are upwards of $ 500 each. How am I supposed to buy a head for my 670 that I farm with. I have been lucky and been able to keep my MM's going with only minor problems. I had a big news flash when I had to put $1,500 worth of cylinder heads on my G900 this spring and I could have bought a nice 2-105 white for what I have into this G900. People just aren't farming with MM's anymore and the current prices make it hard for someone to get into collection them.

I am very happy to see that my MM's are worth something, but there just is not the interest out there for them. Parts are getting harder to find and many are going overseas or being turned into pulling tractors everyday. I know of many older gentleman who read different classified adds and say oh hey this guy wants $ 10,000 for this M670 so mine should be worth that also.

I don't know how many countless times I have been to an auction, bidding on something and been beat out over sometimes just a few dollars by an older gentleman. My rant is these people who have 15 million MM's do you really need another or could you let a younger guy buy it? Nice tractors bring good money, and that is a very good thing, but sometime people who complain that there is no interest (directed to no one in particular) may you should keep your hand down the next time you're bidding against someone from a younger generation.

Joe: You make a good point. And I am sure Alan nor did I mean fellows like you, which are few and far between. But how many young guys do you see at a show. I was at Amana last week end and as I sat there looking at the people milling about I thought to myself, mostly the same people that were there 20-30 years ago only less because thy are no longer around. Mostly gray hair using a cane or a walker. There were a handful of young bucks, but some of them were only there because they brought a tractor in for their grandfather.
As far as cost for a MM tractor, I am sure you can buy more horsepower per dollar in a MM tractor than you can a red or green one. $5.000 to $10,000 will put you in pretty good shape. I paid $7,000 for a very good 1355 LP can you get that kind of power for less? Do all my farming with MM. I will grant you can't afford to farm with a UDLX.

Wasn't directed at you Joe, nor people like you. When I was speaking of the younger generation Im talking about kids in school yet. They don't seem to want to learn history of how we got to where we are. Everything has to be electronic. Most older tractors aren't "convenient" enough since there is usually no cab, AC, big stereo etc. They seem to lose touch with what pleasure it is at times to just be out in the open and relax at what you are doing.

Guys, don't take it personally. I hear that each and every day from guys at the dealership. People classify all young people the same way anymore. I do not have any local friends who are into MMs and it goes both ways.

1. There isn't the interest in the younger generation to preserve the history of the great equipment that built this country.

2. Next time anyone who is older has the chance to help someone younger out, do it. Tell your stories, state why it's important to you to preserve what we can. An if you have the chance to help someone get into MMs by all means do it!

My farm is 30 miles from Homestaed. I am embarrassed that I never even considered asking if they could use ome help. ( neither was I asked)
perhaps we can put our heads together and build upon the ashes. One thing I would like to see ( and even pay for) would be repair clinics on
how to fix some ot the common MM issues.......

Adjust power steering on an M -5
Rebuils a water pump
Replace rear main seal
Adjust torque and pto
Time the spools on the Teloflow
Etc etc

As a younger guy (although not so young). I go to ask how to repair these common things.

What do you think?

That would be interesting. Going to be getting my M5 in the shop for a clutch job, adjust the pto and then am going to go through the tel-o-flo hydraulic valves as you mentioned. Never had one apart before. I have a 5 Star that when I got it the remotes didn't work so I did adjust / time the valves somewhat through the fill hole where the rate and cycle levers are. Was not the easiest thing to do, but I did get them to work. If all goes well with the M5, then I have another M5 that I need to do.

It would be cool to get together and work on it, so we can all see how it is done. I usually follow the book, then call around to figure out what I did wrong......

Would really be interested in attending any "classes" on MM systems --- I THINK THE MUSEUM AT CHARLES CITY WOULD BE A GREAT SITE and any informational books would be there! I agree as to the cost and need to encourage newer "fans" to MM.
