moline 445 hydraulic fluid

Anybody know what type of fluid can be used in the hydraulics for a Moline 445 universal? The manual calls for ATF type A, but what is todays replacement for that? Bought a bucket of fluid from the Tractor supply today but when I was about to pour it in I noticed it is not red like ATF fluid is. Thinking the guy at the store sold me the wrong stuff.

The closest modern equivalent I know of is Dextron III.

I have read on this forum that some guys run hytran or Hyguard in their systems if they share equipment with other make of tractors, and have no problems. It would probably be best to change it all rather than mix the different kinds though.

Fellas, please remember in the late '50s there was no other light hydraulic/transmission fluid. You will have no problem at all using any of the modern H/T fluids. There are only a small group of refiners that make all the brands of fluids.

(quoted from post at 13:35:24 06/04/15) thanks guys, good information

Dextron III is the current equivalent to the original MM hyd- fluid.

I (we) use Dex III in all of the open center MM tractors that we have. I dedicate cylinders to dextron III and use those on the open center tractors. I do run hy-tran in the closed center tractors. The dextron has not given us any problems and I have no hydraulic leaks when using it. The new hyd fluid (hy- tran untraction) worries me about using it in the older tractors with the additives in it and detergents etc.
