Helping a friend with a 5 star

Hi Moline guru's,

A friend of mine wants to put a loader on his 5 star. He has two hoses going to the back with Pioneer hydraulic QD's. He want to put on a full hydraulic loader and bucket. Is it possible with a 5 star or does he need to go with a trip bucket model? ? I don't know the answer and am hoping to find some help. Please help if you can and thanks for any input provided.

thanks dave

Myself I would go with a pto pump and valve set up on a 5 Star or early M5 because of the early hydraulic pumps. Just my opinion mind you. I have seen some with the center housing cracked from use and the coupler that drives them is a weak spot. They can be plumbed in just like the later models with the Tel-O-Flo hydraulic systems.

Yes, no, maybe.

If the hydraulic unit on the tractor is the later Tel-0-Flo, with the 3 levers on it, it can work all 4 double acting cylinders on a loader. I have the setup on a jetstar with I think an L700 or L800 loader on it and it has dump cylinders on the bucket. You need double acting cylinders as the oil in them is needed by the system, the reservoir only holds about a gallon and a half.

I am thinking some of the early 5 stars had a different hydraulic system that did not have the remotes or rate and cycle levers on them. For these, I don't know if you can work a loader or not.

BUT it is SLOW! Painfully slow! If you ever used another loader of about any other type you won't be happy.

Alan is right, your tractor needs another pump/valve/reservoir setup.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. It has three levers. One for the three point and one for each hydraulic hose but I don'rt see to remember seeing a return port. Should there be return ports that I did not see. Do the three functions I discribe for levers match what you were saying?

We are trying to do this inexpensively as possible. He's retired on a fixed income. If you still think it is best to uses pto pump I'll advise him accordingly.

Thx dave

If he is retired, he likely isn't in a big hurry so the valves & pump on the tractor will do what he needs especially if he is going to be mostly moving things around with it. In that case moving slower is a good thing. There are 4 ports in a square pattern where the one is connected now. The top pair is for one handle & the bottom pair is for the other handle (the two inner of the three).
