Just a couple. Spent most of the day on the G and a little on the M5

AHH the memories! My brother and I plowed many a furrow with a 49 MM UTU with G motor and 4 Bottom JD plow and 59 MM 5-Star Diesel and 4 bottom mounted plow, back in north central Illinois. How many bottoms you pulling with each? And thanks for the photos. Always enjoy seeing the Plow-Day photos as we don't get too many of those here in sunny AZ. John

I was pulling a #70 IHC 3-16s plow. My G needs a little help in a couple of areas. Most critical is that it won't stay in 3rd gear. As such, I stay in second which is slow for a 3 bottom plow. If I move up to a 4-16s, I have trouble maintaining my footing - need to load tires. I can pull the same plow with my U but the G does it with less effort, in any and all conditions. Ideally, I would fix the shifting, load the rears and pull 4 all the time. Maybe for next year.

Which of your MM's is in front of that plow? And what is the purpose of the packer behind it? Need the education.

604 on front. LOL DEERE 9620T on front. Packer to firm ground up without making second pass for potato planting. Too loose without firming up some. Saves on fuel without making second pass. Pulling 10 bottoms 12-14" deep 5-5.5 mph. Can plow 75 acres a day on bigger fields.

Thought that probably was the purpose. i think I'll do something similar on my sweetcorn ground. The ground gets so puffed up that it becomes impossible to drive the Cub with a planter on it unless you're in a tractor track under the disked ground. Thanks for the education Doug.

Isn't that a GB rather than a G? It has an arched front axle and the rear fenders look like the full GB style cut down............

I also have a GB. Interesting how much time we spend standing on those old tractors. We sit just long enough to rest, so we can stand again. LOL

I enjoy standing, at least most of the time. Eventually my feet and legs get tired of it. I do like having the ability to watch what the plow is doing without having to twist my neck around, and I like being able to easily get off and on the tractor if I have to make adjustments or unplug the plow. I really appreciated the getting on and off thing a few years ago plowing wheat stubble. The straw was chopped and spread but on occasion was still thick enough to cause problems. With ease I got off the machine, unplugged things before the situation became a problem, walked back on the the tractor, pushing the clutch ahead, all in one smooth motion, and away I would go. Others stopped their tractor, struggled to get off, do their thing, struggle to get back on, put the tractor in gear and make another attempt.

That is a GB that someone hacked the fenders off. Some folks ask me why I haven't painted it. Well, if I ever find a decent set of fenders for it, I might. But until then, I'll leave it with its battle scars.
