Does anyone know how many Massey 97 diesel were made with the Elwood front end. Is it worth putting back together engine threw a rod. so need a complete motor and a few other parts

Don't know the number made. but I worked on them at the Lake street tractor plant. They came down the same line and were NOT separated ---could have been MM, MM, MM, MF. MM, MF, you only knew by color---same as the 705 and 706---MF didn't differentiate by number----but I believe they were cheaper than MM to buy.

I should know the number of those diesels or l.p. but to be sure , I don't !! My l.p. w/elwood is no. 94 of 95 built, I do know that. For some reason 400 and some diesel stands out in my mind. BMG1 will know! He is the walking info. person on this type of stuff. WE NEED HELP BRIAN !!!!!!

I've been looking for MF sales manuals for years to break down the 95-97 order codes but have not been able to find any. All I can tell you is it appears there were 499 diesels and 84 LP 4wd MF97 made. How many were early versus late I don't know. Does anyone have a serial number break for the early model Elwood? 2wd and 4wd MF97 shared same serial numbers so I may be able to tell from that.

My 706 diesel is #95 with an elwood. I've seen #105 with a coleman axle. if they were on the same line, it must be around 100

I am almost positive that 1962 was the only year that the elwood was used. 63 and 64 coleman was used. I also am under the impression that there are no documented figures as to how many 97's were frt. assist. Right Brian ????? The only thing I did research years ago, was that in 1962 a total of 95 l.p. 97's were built, again who knows how many were elwood frt, assist. Wish I was involved back then and could of went to elwood just to see the operation. Less than an hr. from here!! The salvage yard that a lot of the axles were being supplied from is less than an hr. the other way from here. It's also long gone.

Dean,
You peaked my curiosity tonight so I did some digging. Per the MF97 parts microfiche the change to Coleman front axle happened at 25300093 LP and 25200506 for diesel. Based on this there were 15 Elwood and 69 Coleman LP made and 100 Elwood and 399 Coleman Diesels made. The MF97 Elwoods were all made in 1962 only.
There were 264 LP MF97 made in 1962. They were made right up until 12/31/62 and then started again in February 1963. I don't know why the serial number references out there say only 95 made in 1962 because the data does not support that statement.

Brian, my l.p. 97 w/elwood axle is serial no. 25300094 . Got me scratching my head !!! Who knows for sure what serial no. axles changed. Something to make discussion !!!! --?????

Dean,
I don't always trust the MF (or MM for that matter) parts books. I can tell you that units 91-95 were built in one batch as 2wd units but under a different order code. Since I don't have any sales guides for MF I don't know the significance of that different order code. If I were to believe the parts book cutoff (skeptical) then 088 would be the last LP 4wd Elwood made. I just sold diesel #48 and it is cutout in the bottom for the Elwood transfer case but it was built as a 2wd from the factory.

Ha-Ha! Things were really "Basic" at Elwood MFG. I visited them fall of '79 and winter of '80/'81. I can imagine they had even cruder capabilities back in the early '60's. In the late '70's/early 80's they had no automated machines, NC or cam operated, was all manual machines. Glorified welding shop, but the two guys in charge were REALLY really sharp! The axles I was using I know they were buying more critical parts machined complete and not making as many parts in-house. You can make tight tolerance parts with manual machines, just can't make them as fast as with automated machines.
