504 Camshaft

Was it common for the oil pump drive teeth on the cam to fatigue and strip off? I am just starting to get into a 504 in a Vista that has been sitting for a while and it looks like I am going to need a cam because of that...

I am not familiar with the 504, but if it was a U or G I would say someone tried rolling the engine over when water was frozen in the oil pump, which is in the lowest part of the oil pan.

I find that to be a very common problem when tearing these engines apart. Most of them I have are worn in that spot or the gear is perfect and the cam has a bad lobe or two. I do have one or two good ones on the shelf if you can't find another. Good luck! Mike (507)360-6748

I feel like it must have happened while running because I have all of the pistons out and it still bars over extremely hard. It must have stripped the gear and continued to run without oil pressure and spun a main bearing. I dropped one of the middle ones and it wasn't spun but didn't get a chance to drop the other mains.
