the other day I came across a tractor in very rough condition. I checked the serial number tag and as the model it said it was a UDU. when I was checking tractor data on this machine it said there were only 30 of them made. Is this correct? This may sound dumb but was it a diesel? As this particular unit just has the bare crankcase the owner said the rest of the engine was in a shed.. he couldn't remember if it was a diesel when you put all the stuff away and didn't want to have to go through the effort to find all of it at that time. He bought it in its present condition.

Yes that would have been a diesel, actually from what I know the first diesel that MM put in the U series (in this country) in later 1952. It was then put in the UB series.

Were there actually only thirty of them made? This thing is in a box but its allegedly all there. There would have to be somthing pretty special about it to make it worth fixing.its sitting outside and it doesn't even have tires on it. The wheels oddly enough are in good shape as it is sitting on concrete.

First U diesels were in 1952 but we.re standards.1530 U diesels were made. Double check serial number.i have a good parts one.

You are correct in that there were 30 UDUs made. One unit was made in in 1952 and 29 in 1953. The story goes that that the intension was to introduce the diesel engine in the UBUs but the engines were ready before new UBU drive system. So 30 UDUs were made so that they could get some field time on the new engine. It is reported that the original engines had problems with the crank and many (if not all) were recalled and the crank and rods were replaced.

Neat find.

If it is a diesel it will have a huge oil filter in side of crankcase. A gas has external upright cannister. Also diesel will have a three bolt starter whereas gas has a one bolt in cranckcase housing.

If the tags are both good (engine and trans) I'd say
its worth saving. If you're not interested in it
please post details as I might be if its nearby.
