MM M5 serial number question

I'm looking at a diesel M5. The serial number prefix is 171 which is for a gas or lp tractor. The engine number is 11403*** which I believe is a M5 engine.

Does a diesel engine swap strait into a a gas/lp rear end? Just curious is a prior owner did some swapping around of MM got in a hurry and put a diesel engine in.

Im sure someone could have put a diesel in a gasoline / lp rear end. Although odd things can come out of the factory at times. Does the engine paint match the rest of the tractor or had it been repainted? That might make it hard to tell.

That makes me curious as to what the serial number is of the tractor. If it is a way early number maybe it came from the factory that way.

I jumped over to Brian Rules MM registry and it looks like the 5 star,M5, and M 602 all used 114 as the diesel prefix. The tractor serial is 17102678 and the engine is 11403350. The tractor has been repainted a terrible yellow all over.

I ended up buying the ugly duckling for $750. It does have 3pt (with the MM center link), pto, and hydraulics. It was running but a shaft broke in the injector pump.

All she needs is a little TLC -- 750 is a steal -- I have an 1962 M5 diesel and love it -- especially that Moline engine sound !!
