G900 Starter

Fresh full rebuild on the G900 Gas (Crank, rings, valves, etc..). Motor is a little on the tight side. Solenoid sticks after a few 8 second cranks. Destroyed one starter already. Thinking of pull-starting it to get it fully up and running.

Any ideas?

If it was mine I would turn it over with a ratchet to make sure it wasn't too tight. Want to make sure you dont damage somthing. Check the valve adjustment just in case. If you rotated it the wrong direction before setting the valves or had a couple out of adjustment it could make it hard to start. If I was sure things were ok I would shut tbe gas off "pull start" it till it had oil pressure then try it for real.

8 seconds is a long crank for a gas engine, should be running 2 to 3. Get after that problem. The solenoid welding itself together should never happen - but it does. I've been told that excessive draw (imperfect starter) will cause this but I can't verify. Recently had one do this on a Farmall. The problem wasn't resolved until my rebuild folks gave me a different starter with, what I was told, a stronger starter drive. I would hold the starter folks' feet to the fire, this is a potentially dangerous situation, can't be accepted.
