u hydraulic cap

I am looking for a replacement hydraulic fill cap / dipstick for a U. Does anyone know where I can buy one? Mine has had an external hydraulic tank added and I would like to remove it. The original tank and valve assembly is still used they just put a hose over the filler neck and attached an external tank to it. I was told it was to increase capacity so it would raise a barge wagon.

I cannot express myself with any authority as an expert. My U, which seems original, does not have a dipstick. Hydraulic reservoir is closed with a simple pipe cap.

That plug should be the same on any of the Uni-matic systems (R Z U G series). They shouldn't be too hard to find. The original reservoir set up had about a 3" filter screen about the size of a nickel that was screwed into the hole before the plug. A lot of them were removed because it took to long to fill the reservoir.

I guess I was assuming it had a dipstick. I would like it to be original but I would settle for somthing sealed. The extra tank lets water in. Every time it gets rained on the crankcase fills up with water not to mention whats in my hydraulics. Ill pull thd tank off and see what is left of the original system. Thanks

Although I have seen pipe plugs in those tanks, I am pretty certain that the original plug was a shouldered design with straight threads, I am thinking it had a 1-1/4" hex on it and used a copper gasket to seal it to the tank. I bet Wendell Everett 740-922-3335 or Welters 417-498-6496 can help you come up with one either n.o.s. or good used.

There was also a filter screen threaded in the hole beyond the cap, but that might be tough to find.

Also, If you have the setup I think you have, I bet the vent tube to the engine has been sealed off. There was originally a 1/4" copper vent pipe from the top of the tank to a port on the left side (I think) of the crankcase. If you plug the fill opening and don't provide a vent, it will probably ooze oil somewhere.

Yes I thought about that and I dont understand how this thing ever worked because the extra hydraulic tank is higher up than the vent which is still hooked up. It has been on there for years but doesn't seem to loose oil. I would think it has to but Im not sure. I am sure the vent tube is still hooked up. I have to think its where im getting water into the crankcase. My antifreeze is good and the other day where I pulled the stick the oil was hazy with ice chunks on the stick. I cracked the drain plug after it thawed and I got crystal clear water out the bottom. Not much but it definitely was not antifreeze. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
