We got a gb with a bad trany and we found a u trany that has been sitting for 45 years. And seems to be in really good shape so will it bolt right up?? It's ok if gearing is diff hopefully a little slower

I am thinking yes and no.- You can probably get them together somehow, but if the GB engine has the same block as the 403 power unit, you will have issues mounting the starter. The centerline of the starter is about 1/2" farther from the center of the crank and you will have to grind clearance in the U bell housing. Also, the U rear was designed for only about 40-50 hp and the GB with 60 + hp. was equipped with an extra support block to keep the ring gear from flexing under high torque loads. Also, I am thinking the GB brakes were bigger.

Keep looking, There should be a parts GB out there somewhere.

In your search for parts, keep in mind that the GB shares common transmission parts with a UB Special, although not the transmission case itself. These parts are not all common with a plain UB. I would expect that parts are also common with a U Special, although I do not know that absolutely.

They can be swapped out. Housings made a bit different but a bit of trial and error and they will bolt up. U (unless a very late model) had different brakes. Starter clearance already noted; also a situation with some flywheels. If you use the bell adapter on the GB; fewer problems than bolting engine direct to trans.
