Help - KTA engine problem

I have a 35 KTA that has always run well til today. Last week I noticed it was slinging water at the shaft coming off the water pump to run the magneto. I tightened nut around shaft as per manual. Water problem solved and no obvious problems.

Today I ran it to check out before parade next week and it ran good at various throttle settings for about a mile then started popping and missing at full throttle. Backed of throttle and it settled down.

Drove it back to barn and it started to do the same thing at half throttle. Parked it and left it running but it died.

Checked fuel and seems OK. White smoke and rough on restart but it did smooth out. Then started popping and sputtering again.

Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks, Ed

White smoke tells me to look at a head gasket leaking water into the cylinders and fouling plugs to or a cracked head is two things that could be going on. Check the oil for water as well.

Also pull the plugs out and check them over too for signs of water. It wouldn't hurt to crank engine over with plugs out to see if water comes out the holes too,

I had kind of guesses the white meant steam / water - just not sure where it came from and why it was inconsistent. I was kind of figuring I'd do a compression check, but then I realized I don't have adapter for the big (7/8 in thread ?) plugs. Guess I'll turn it over and see if anything comes out - hoping its a head gasket not a head as it has the HC head which would no doubt be hard to replace. Any idea what Compression Ratio the HC heads on the 283 ci motor gave?

I hope it's not a head either ed, but if it is I have 3 pressure checked bare heads on the shelf and no of 10 or 12 more sitting to help you out if needed. Just let me know ed.

If you don't see evidence of water when you remove the plugs. Before you take the head off. Clean the points in the mag and set to .015.

Thanks for help and suggestions.

Found lots of rust in fuel tank. Cleaned tank as well as I could, cleaned sediment bowl screen, changed carb, new fuel lines with additional in-line filter and got it to run OK. Still getting debris in the in-line filter but getting less now.

Still a bit rough and idles rough but pedigree of TTX24 carb I put on is unknown. Bought in pallet of carbs at auction - openings taped and remnant of tag so it was no doubt rebuilt at one time.

Would like to find gasket and rebuild original TTX24 but at $55 for a kit maybe I'll just try and adjust the "new" one. But not sure carb is the issue - kind of like its dropping a cylinder at idle.

Started like it was running on a single cylinder, then went to 2 cyl - sounded like a deere - then caught on all 4.

Will take mag cover off to check all 4 contacts are good.

Still trying to find an adapter for 7/8 in threads so I can run a compression check.
