605 crankshaft

I've spent too much time hauling manure lately and it has allowed my mind to wander too much. I've heard of people putting 403 crankshafts in 283's but would be possible to put a 605 crank in a 504? I do not have one laying around to measure journals. This maybe would be a fun future project for a wore out Vista. Thanks

As far as I know, the crank will drop right in,
but just like converting a 283 to a 403, you will
need to change the jugs, pistons and rods to 605
stuff if you want to use stock parts. With
expensive custom pistons, you can use the shorter
504 jugs.

BigIron dot com just auctioned off a complete 605 today. It brought $$612 I believe. Of course it was in Nebraska I think. Had 4231 heads I think.

The crankshafts in 605s are not all the same on the front where the timing gear goes. The diameter of the crank is different and the timing gears have a different number of teeth on both the crank gear and the cam gear. IF the crank gear has the same number of teeth as the 504, the 605 crank should fit.

I've got a complete 605 laying in the shed which is part of what got me started thinking about this. I believe ours is an early 605. I would think those would have different timing gears than the 504 and the later ones would be the same?

I'm pretty sure the early 605s have 35 & 70 teeth on the crank & cam gears. The later ones have 36 & 72 teeth.

they all have same number of teeth they just have a different size nose for the pulley. You use the gear off the small nose crank to put the g crank in the later style engines
