GB ring gear and pinion replacement question

I have a GB with a noisy rear end. Upon examination, the bearing cage for the beveled pinion gear is loose and the pinion is severely wore and chipped. The differential ring gear looks good. Do these have to be replaced as a matched set or can I just replace the beveled pinion gear?

all crown and pinions are sold as one unit. even if using used they must be a matched set. if one gear is junk then so is the other one.

I"m not disagreeing with the fact that they should
both be changed but we have a G 1000 and a G
900 that we have only changed the pinon in. We
made sure we had endplay and have had no
problems.

I only changed the ring gear in my M5. That was in 2000. Have not had any problems since then..... so it can be done.

Normally they are changed in a matched set. A lot of the old tractors are somewhat forgiving if they aren't used heavily or excessively.
