what is this 504 engine from?

found a Minneapolis engine for sale, the serial number tag shows the model as D504A6. and serial no. 29701227.

any ideas what this engine was originally in? will it bolt into a GBD? what might not fit?

Im not sure about a gbd but there is an older post involving interchangability that says it should. If im correct a gbd used a 451 so it should fit from what I can find out but ive never done it.

i dont think the 504 will fit a GBD. i was told the 504 is a small bell engine and a GBD has a big bell housing. thats why the HD800 will fit the GBD cause it is a big bell. the 425 and 605 are big bell engines. it sounds like it is out of a G1000 cause i had a guy want to my a 605 i have but he said he needed a small bell engine and he wanted a 504
 
I agree that the 504 diesel from a G1000 would not fit because it would be a small bell. If the 504 were from a 705, 706, 707, or 708 it would fit. The hand clutch 6 cylinder diesels used a large bell, and the later G1000, G900 series have a small bell.
 
So if the bell housing is different, Can u use the heads,
pistons, rods and blocks off it and bolt them into my original
425 crank and case?

bell and small bell im assuming is referring to the belt housing?
The letter and m series is big bell and g series is small bell ? Do
I have this right?
 
There are big bell 504s, that"s what"s in the G-705 and up. Also there were some HD 504 power units, those would also be "big bell" engines.
