Jumps out of gear

My 445 has a real worn shifter and she jumps out of gear. Are the two issues related or do I need to dig deeper into the transmission? Thanks Marty

Marty, My money is on the real worn shifter. I bet it's not letting the shifting forks fully engage the gears and jumps out under a pull. Replacing it first is where I would start at.

Thanks! With the rain the last few days, I have some time out of the field to do some 'fixin'. I'll work on the shifter and let you know.

I have a 4 Star that jumps out of 4th gear.

A loose, sloppy shifter lever is somewhat common on these series of tractors. However it can be greatly aggravated by a broken shifting lever spring. (The horse shoe shaped spring that is under the numbers on the shift indicator)
It is Item #20 on page 41 of parts manual.

However, this has little if anything to do with it jumping out of gear. I replaced the transmission slider shaft retainer spring and then also added a washer to increase spring tension. This helped some but did not cure the problem. (Spring #32 on page 41 of parts manual)

I can not see any obvious problems with the shifter fork or gears.

On mine it only takes a little pressure on the shift lever to hold it in gear. Aggravating, but I don't use 4th gear very often.

When you pull the cover, cut the heads off of a couple of longer bolts and use for studs to help align cover when reinstalling.

I say this because on my jetstar I have no problems in any gear except 4th. The shifter will hit the steer column support and it does want to jump out of that gear. I can monkey around with it and get it to stay.

majorlucas,
I agree with rvirgil_KS that the #10A7075(S) shifting lever spring just keeps the shift lever out of your lap. Since the spring is normally broken and rusted away; no one knows it is there.

Most of the time I first replace the four #10A13099 shift springs and the #GM145656 balls, when the tractor starts jumping out of gear. Water ruins the detents if no one lubes the holes.

When you pull the top off of the tranny, to see what is wrong, those two things are now an easy job. If changing a handful of inexpensive parts solves the problem; you smile. If the problem is still with you; you still fixed two other problems anyway. Time to start robbing that tractor on the bone pile.

When I originally made up those little shifter parts; I thought everyone would happily replace their worn out shifter parts. I even made up kits with the #10A7073 and #10A6807 shifter seals included. My silver haired father laughed that no one would buy my little shifter tune up kit. He told me that when a tranny acted up; everyone immediately tore into the gears first. No one ever looked at the shifter or clutch as the problem. He was right and I was wrong....as usual. He worked half a century, as a mechanic, and he spoke from experience. Take some advice from an old white haired mechanic. Start with the simple stuff first.

Happy wrenching.

Thank you everyone! When I opened her up all of the detent springs were missing. Robbed them off a donor and now the problem is SOLVED!

The mystery is where the originals have gone. The gasket was gone as well.......

Kevin,

I had that same problem with hitting the steering support on one of my tractors.

I took the shifter lever off and put a little bit more bend in the lever. It was hard to get the roll pin out, but it was worth it.
