A4T-1600 Questions

Dad has picked up an Oliver 2655 LP with the 504B-6 engine, which I think is the same engine that's in the G1350 LP as well. Anyway, the starter on it is not the right one (its much bigger than its supposed to be and I wonder if someone changed it out from a diesel), and it is also not working well at all. Since it is supposed to have the same starter that came on the G950LP-G1350LP tractors, we were wondering if there is a gear reduction starter that is available for these tractors? We've been having really good luck with the gear reduction starters on our Oliver's and would like to put one on this tractor instead of replacing it with a like kind original. Anyone know if one is available and if so the part number?

Thanks.

Not an answer to your question, but I looked back at your pictures and can't tell exactly what kind of starter is on it. We never had any lp's but the diesel starters had the ground on the motor part of the starter. We would run two 12 volt batteries and run both positive cables to the solenoid and both negative cables to the motor part of the starter. There should also be a heavy cable that grounds the motor part of the starter to the block. Some of the tractors we had would have the negative cables to the block or frame, it seems they spin faster if you run your negative cables directly to the starter, right or wrong that is how we did it and over all those years, I don't remember having trouble with the starters, they are a heavy built unit, I even have one of the big ones on my M670, spins it over like crazy.

I have gear reduction starter on my 504 deisel , in our vista..we two flat washer between it in casting.its works great..dont know of it work for your applucatiin...but if u need no. I glad send pic.an no. Of it

Hey Mitch,

Talk to Lawrence Wilson, He sells gear reduction starters and should have one that will work. 910-585-0341.

Thanks for the responses guys, talked to Lawrence today, gave him the original Delco numbers for the LP A4T's and he tried to find a gear reduction unit that would match, but no luck so far. Will keep looking.

Maybe this one???

I think that should work fine, thanks for the pics. I assume you're just using the washers to shim the starter drive out far enough to make it engage correctly? I can't quite make out the starter number in the photo, would you mind letting me know what the number is and we'll try one of those. Thanks again.

Hey mitch.i get no .of starter in afternoon..we found that same starter has two different bendixs. For it..this starter is 40lbs lighter then factory starter...u might not need flat washers between housing an starter. We have a rouch sfy flwheel in it an sstock ring gear...we needed to lose the weight .an my local starter generator shop.found this starter for us

This appears to be a dsl crankcase with the larger starter. That is a 37MT frame, the LP is a 27MT frame. If that is a gas crankcase that's still a 37MT starter put in it.

Lawarance is that u ? Lw....we tried 32 mt starter..but was two big .we tried next starter , which was same as u see in the pic.but gear was too big ..so back to eletric shop.he new exzactly starter we needed then.next day .he had it. But when we bolted it up the gear to close to flywheel. So jus couple flat washer took care of that.works good.

I think it weighs like 30lbs , were old one weighs 85lbs unipoint 410-12285 is on the tag ..that is a deisel crankcase..deisel flywheel. Mitch .please keep me informed, i like now if it works for..i can give my eletric shop no. An buy right from him..if that help u...

We tryed our starter outa our massy 97 an nose cone was different..we did some grinding on it ..an it fit but .wwe needed to lose the weight.a 42 mt was not the match. I think if on old style big bells a powerstroke starter was what we used in it .but thats been along time ago ..lol ...well hope the info helped

Interesting point. I have an 8.3 Cummins that I bought the other day for a repower. It has a new 37MT CW rotation starter on it that won't work for my application. I'll give that starter a try first and see if it works, the price will be right if we could get that lucky.

Here is a picture starter nameplate that is currently on the 2655. Pic is taken with a mirror, so numbers are backwards, but the starter numbers are 113139, and 42175. He eventually pulled the starter off the tractor and the gear has 9 teeth.

The 37MT gear reduction replacements can be made with no nose offset like the one the other fellow pictured or with a offset. The offset may have a smaller gear but the offset puts it into mesh, how ever the pitch size of the gear teeth will be different if its smaller with the same # or more teeth. The 37MT is also 3.625 where it locates and the 27MT is 3.500 and the 37 uses 1/2 bolts vs. 3/8.

I was short a number on the starter motor, its actually 1113139, which makes it a starter motor body that is from an Oliver 1855 I believe. At some point in it's life, someone has adapted this motor to a cone that will fit the Minnie flywheel. Thought I had the problem solved with the starter from an 8.3 cummins, but turns out the LP starters have to be much shorter because of the LP linkage coming off the block (overall length has to be less than 11 inches), so we're back to square one. I'm of the opinion having looked at this and compared it to our 1865LP starter and checked the p/n's on the diesels and LP's, that the LP starter is only different because it had to be shorter in order to fit. Ohio pplowboy, if you have an opportunity, would you mind measuring the overall length of the starter you put on your vista?

Since this isn't the original starter, we don't want to rebuild it, and if we can't find a gear reduction unit that will fit, I guess we'll just buy a new starter made for the LP's.
