Bull pinion bearing removal

ugly UB

I am trying to replace my outer bull pinion bearings on a early U row crop and I cannot seem to get them to pop out. Do I need to some how pull the shaft or is there any other way of doing it? Thanks

STOP!

Did you remove the top cover and take the bull gears off the axle shafts?

You have to have the bull gears off the axles and drop them down in the case out of the way so the pinion carriers will come out.

Its been a while since I did this, you may actually have to pull the axles-housing and all-out of the case to drop the bull gears.

You do not need to pull the carriers as described to replace the outer bearings. You need to remove the brakes and backing plate. Then the smaller inner cast cover that is held in with 3/8" bolts. You should be able to see the outer bearing at this point. Put the nut on the pinion that held on the drum. You may be able to pry the shaft out using the back of the nut. Another way is to place a bearing puller plate behind the nut and use a porta- power with a crab claw type spreader behind it and apply pressure, if it does not come out easily keep pressure applied and strike the nut with a dead blow hammer and the bearing and shaft will jump out. Be careful it can shoot all the way out and damage it when it hits the floor.
