1949 MM ZTU "Slide transmission"

I recently acquired a 1949 MM ZTU and it has what the seller called a "slide transmission" that was used for road work. Anyone out there that can school me on this transmission? Seems like having 2 clutches? Is it rare and what is the benefit of this type transmission. This is my first MM.

Hard to tell without seeing what you are talking about; However: If you are referring to a clutch lever that is attatched in the area of the brake assembly; that is a live power clutch.pulling back on it will "clutch" the drive power to that side of the drive axle allowing you to keep the transmission clutch engaged and drive the pto.( simplified explanation and just guessing)

Here is a picture of it.

From your picture that looks like my uncles 1939 ZTU. I think they were all the same. That is the way the shift levers are on them. As far as I know there is no second clutch. The shift lever slides left and right for gear placement. The outside lever is the clutch lever.

All Z models from 1936-48 used same style shifter. There was no ZTU in 1949 as they were ZAU. Looks like a basic ZTU.
