Howdy, I have a 68 670 super with white colored gauges that glow green when the headlights are turned on. I saw another 670 super last weekend that had black faced gauges similar to the later g 1000 tractors. Could anyone tell me about what year they made the transition? I personally like the green glowing gauges better, but was just wondering if they are correct for my 1968 tractor. I know at least my tach and hour meter gauge has been replaced. Thank you.

To the best of my knowledge, MM never put a black faced gauge on a tractor. I wish someone would produce a QUALITY white faced replacement gauge for the 60's MM tractors. I would certainly buy some for my U-302 and G-1000 Vista.

I have seen some pictures of late, like 1970 M670 Supers that have some black gauges in as well as a G900 but never knew if they were originals or replacements. My G950 has black face gauges but they are different gauges than the M670 Super ones.

Yes, you have the correct gauges on your tractor. They switched to black gauges in 1969. At that time they also replaced the oil and amp gauges with "dummy" lights, and moved the start switch and fuse holder to the dash from the panel below. My early '69 670 Super was set up this way. As Alan said, the G900's and others changed at this time too.

Heath, Did they use any additional lighting on the later gauges like that or were they just a regular gauge? Do you have any pictures you can post? I do remember now that I saw ones with a different style dash with the starter switch as you mentioned but didn't really pay attention to it.

I don't remember any backlighting on mine, but I do remember that the fender headlights illuminated the dash pretty well at night.

This is news to me! Both my U-302 Super built in September of 1969 and my G-1000 Vista LP w/3 speed AT built in May of 1969 have white face gauges that are original.

This is my late 1969 (30002847) M670 dash. The gauges are all original as far as I know and all black.

The tach and the temp gauge are the same style that is in my 1971 G950. My fuel gauge is the same style as the temp.

I would agree with Alan's comment below on the temp gauge. It looks exactly like the ones on my G-955 and 2-105 White. Can't make it out clearly but it looks like the fuel gauge has a logo (possibly SW ?) on it so may be a replacement. All of my MM's are LP so don't have fuel gauges in the dash.

I wondered about the fuel gauge as well. I think MM used different suppliers for fuel gauges. Ive seen pictures in an M5 manual with a black faced fuel gauge and my M5 and M602 have white faced ones.

Okay guys, now that I have some time at work I shall shed some light on the gauge question at hand. The switch from the "white" "green backlit" to black gauges was made around 1969. When the M670 went to closed center, flat top fenders and neutral switch on the clutch linkage they switched to the black gauges with two or three "idiot" lights. The third idiot was for the lube pump for the Three speed torq. The fuel gauge in the posted picture doesn"t look OEM but I"ll have to check to be sure. I have some NOS gauges that are black face. I have seen some early 69 670"s with white gauges but the later ones had black ones. They made the same change with the 900"s. I have never seen black gauges in a 302 even the late ones with the ext steering cyl. The black faced gauges do have a 12v light bulb to illuminate them.

The change occurred on the 670"s after Serial #29904595 for gas and lp and 30002570 for the diesels.

The key switch, fuse holder and light switch were moved to the dash as well as a Motorola alternator was installed at this time. If your tractor has indicator lights there is about a 95% chance it should have all three black gauges.

I got to wondering, when did they start using the "fuel pump" logo on them? I cant remember if I saw that before on one from that era or not.
