Hey, any truck advice for a fellow MM guy?

Hey guys, I don't mean to be off topic on this forum. I'm finally in the market for a new three quarter ton truck to haul my fifth wheel flat trailer. Any of you fellows that haul your MM tractors around can help me here. I'm looking at the new ford with the 6.7 diesel. Seems like a swell truck, nice and quiet with good power. . I currently run a 2004 f-250 with a 6.0 diesel. I have over 300,000 miles on her, but have had to do a LOT of costly repairs along the way. I just have not bought a new truck in 10 years and I am not current on what's good vs bad. Any recommendations or input would be great. I haul my jet 3 and big mo backhoe around to job sights often- so I'm not really pulling anything too heavy. Once again sorry to be off topic, I would appreciate any input. Thanks guys.

Well if it was me I'd buy a dodge no doubt, if you want a diesel I'd buy the cummins and if you want a gas I'd buy the new 6.4 hemi, I'd prefer the hemi but if you want a diesel I'd say the cummins is the way to go. That's my suggestion anyways.

I have a 2012 Dodge 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins with 55,000 miles on it and a 2006 Chevy Kodiak 4500 with the Duramax and Allison. Dodge finally got the brakes and transmission right. I have pulled 27,000 pounds with no problem. I do know that is overweight but did not have a choice. It starts exceptionally well (minus 18 degrees in North Dakota). I REALLY like the way the transmission works with the exhaust brake. The Duramax is nice too, it and the transmission works well together. I haven't had problems with it yet, but it sounds as if Chevy repairs are pricy. My family car is a 2003 Ford 4x4, 4 door one ton with a V10. 70,000 miles and not one issue. Pulled 20,000 pounds faster than you can stop it. All this being said Dodge makes a good hard pulling work truck.

6.7s have a decent reputation so far. I traded my 6.0 for a 6.8 gasser and have no regrets. In a couple years I'll be in the market for a 6.2.

Have a new chevy HD 2500 with duramax rated to pull 17,500 lbs love it. Had a 2005 HD2500 duramax only dealer issue air sensor went bad under warranty other then that just usual stuff like brakes and tie-rod ends.

There all good when your not having any trouble with them. The ford Diesels have been good to me. Never had a break down once. Brakes, tires, and service jobs has been about it and I run them hard to well over 200000 miles.

Your 6.0 is likely the highest maintenance engine ford used. Does not have a reputation (at least not the early ones) for durability. Having said that; if you are satisfied with it; you will be thrilled with what you get from the others. I am hearing very good reports on the 6.7. I have a friend that used his Dodge to deliver travel trailers from manufacturer to dealer. as of last week he had 670,000 miles on it. Have not heard a lot on the duramax. generally: You will wear the truck out before the engine goes.

Yeah there a good engine, we had a few whites, still have a 903 cummins in a 4900 Massey and a 855 cummins in our dump truck, had a few other tractors with an 855. Really the cummins is the only "name brand" diesel in a pickup.

You've never heard of Isuzu? One of the most preferred engines in construction equipment and medium duty trucks. Where do think the Duramax comes from? Even the Ford diesel is name brand considering there's millions of them on the road.

Isuzu only made the aluminum parts the cast or steel parts were made in Germany. Duramax diesels are ok.

I would buy an older truck, depending on your cdl maybe a good used early 2000's highway tractor. Have it converted to a single axle and run it for ever. Just as good of fuel mileage and way better reliability. You'll get 200,000 plus miles out of a set of tires. If you buy new, I'd stay away from Navistar. Paccar or Freightliner have some nice offerings. Apparently the new cummins offerings have the emissions crap figured out again.
I went back to the 1990's myself.

Isuzu sounds American lol...... And you make fun of dodge/ram being owned by fiat. Either way your not gonna beat the cummins engine. It's kinda Like a Detroit or cat diesel they have a reputation of good motors to this day

I'm on my eigth Ford diesel. It's a 2011 6.7, one of the first ones. It is the best truck I've owned. I've had them all and have run them all in business pulling a forty foot goose neck. The 6.7 get's the best fuel milage and will out pull anything on the rode today. Ford spent eight years developing this engine because the 6.4 and 6.0 that came from Navistar were so crummy. After six years of lawsuits, Ford finally got most of the warranty money that Navistar owed them. So far they have not been into one of the 6.7 engines in our area. With no load it gets 19 on the interstate at 75 MPH and 25 MPG on a two lane road. It is a hoss. It is coupled to a six speed transmission that has been proven over the years in the bigger trucks that Ford makes. Yes, they all are good when they work but if you look at the statistics on who owns work, you will see that Ford does it better hands down. This is my experience.

Hate to burst your bubble, but rams 3.6 v6 2wd and 8 speed tranny only get 25, and there 3.0l Eco diesel don't even get that and its in a 1500. So your saying your 6.7 is stock and gets 25. Not buying it, not saying it would be a terrible truck, but it isn't getting 25mpg stock. Say its gotta 37 gallon tank as ive found on the internat your saying you can make it 925 miles on a tank. Doubt that. Hope not many are buying your story.

I was in the same boat need a new truck but didn"t want to pay 50 grand on a pickup. So I went looking an picked up a 1995 L8000 ford single axle tractor to pull my goose neck. It has 135.000 on it 8.3 Cummins 6 speed will pull anything I put behind it and I got 4500 in it. Its all what you want to pay and use it for. Good Luck happy shopping.

Your bubble is the only one busted. And yes it is stock and if you drive 55 on a two lane road it will get 25 MPH. The most milage I've gotten out of one tank of fuel is 665 miles but that's driving a combination of insterstate, town and two lane combined in one trip. I'm not getting into a pissing contest with anybody here; I'm just telling you what my truck will do if you don't get in a hurry. I've owned Dodge's with Cummings diesel with autos and standards and I'm telling you that the Ford will outpull them time and time again with fewer trips to the shop and you don't have to listen to all that rattling either. If you like Dodge trucks, that's your perrogative but don't try to tell me what I know to be the truth about my trucks. I never said that I got nine hundred miles out of a tank of fuel; you put those words into my mouth not me. You inserted something into my advice that wasn't there. All you have to do is look at the statistics. The F-150 is the best selling vehicle, not just truck, but the best selling vehicle thirty three plus years running. The Super Duty trucks own work and they didn't take any government money when they were handing it out either. I think I'll just keep buying Fords.

Best selling because its the cheapest. And the "rattling" is because the cummins sounds like a real diesel a powerstroke sounds like a gas. You can bad talk the cummins but why is it in semis, tractors, dozers etc, and the powerstroke is in a ford only. And the inline 6 is better than a v8 why do you think tractors and semis run inline 6 cylinders. Six in a row makes them go! If you like the ford good. But the dodge cummins or hemi are tough to beat.

That's real clever "six in a row makes them go". I think I rememeber a slogan too that says something about "Ford tough". Sayings and cheap words don't make you the best; stats do. Dodge may be tough to beat but they are every day by the best in my opinion. And that's what this forum is all about, my opinion and yours. Who's right will be decided by actual results and our freedom to choose the truck we like. Ford's are not cheap either. If I wanted a "cheap" truck I'd go buy a GM.

"Ford tough" I thought it was found on road dead or fix or repair daily. Guess we will agree to disagree. We both like are own and that's what makes the world go round. If everyone had the samething it'd be pretty boring. And I like to get people going about fords on here! Some take it better than others

Thanks for all the input gentlemen. I just returned from truck shopping and feel like I need a drink! The f250 and f350 trucks have almost DOUBLED in price since my last purchase in 2004. I think I am set on the ford 6.7 or Chevy duramax. The ford has great factory rebates and incentives right now, and the fuel economy will be hard to beat. I have owned a few dodge trucks in the past and I think they are a good American vehicle- but the inside of the cabs are set up like my wife's minivan. It also seemed a little thirsty on the test drive and the turning radius was not too impressive. The Chevy seemed to have the best acceleration and turning radius. It was also -10 degrees when I started these trucks cold for test drives. The Chevy was by far the quickest to warm up and started quickly. The dodge and the ford seemed a little cold blooded in comparison. I appreciate all the input. I wanted some feedback from hard working fellows that work the hell out of their trucks! Thanks again! And anyone who is running an older diesel should treat themselves to a test drive in a new one. They have really come a long way in a short time. I was impressed.

I knew it wouldn't be long before you brought up all of the common acronyms for Ford. There are some interesting ones for Dodge too but I'm not into name calling. I too still own a Dodge truck but it was built back when Dodge had some sense about em. It is a 1947 Power Wagon. It's a one ton pickup with a 230 CI 75 HP six with 583 gears with a PTO winch up front and 9.00x16 Gumbo mudders. It's baby blue with black running boards and fenders. Now that's a truck!

i think dodge messed up when they changed from the 5.9. i have a 05 3500 dodge and love it. 21mpg on the interstate at 75 miles per hour. i also have a 95 cummins that gets 22 driving around in the country. i love my dodges.

My 7.3 ford diesel runs around fifteen mpg going down the road empty and about twelve with a loaded thirty foot goose neck. My neighbor has about the same pickup as mine and he claims to get 23 mpg. empty. Go figure! I had a 454 in a chevy once and fifteen sounds good to me after that.

If you can't dodge it ram it, or dodge the father ram the daughter lol. There's a lot of good sayings out there.

Yes the 454 Chevy is hard on gas, my dads old one would get 8 on a good day. I like my hemi though I can get 17 on highway, but my old 360 only gets 8-9 but its also full time 4wd which hurts some.

truck advice?? The owner of the car lot I work for is a 100% Ford guy, that said we cant keep a Chevrolet or Dodge diesel on the lot. We have a waiting list for both brands. He sends all Ford diesels to the auto auctions, as a matter of fact he doesnt even want them as trade ins.

My F250 4X2 5spd 7.3 Powerstroke with 3.55 gear ratio pulled 27.2mpg this summer doing about 58mph. It had just received new injectors and a mild program adjustment. It's currently between 300-350hp. I didn't believe it, so I ran three tests on a 150-200 mile trip and checked my odometer to my specific route mileage via mapquest. The first was 26.5mpg, second (driving a little easier), was 27.2mpg, and the last, driving more aggresively in colder weather, was 25mpg. Usually is is about 20-22 driving to work and NO more than 20mpg at 70mph. Hauling a 6000# tractor on a 25ft gooseneck at 60mph, I've gotten as high as 16.

My bro-in-law only gets 12-13 and 15-16 with his 2008 f -350 short bed double cab. It's now got about 58,000 miles on it. It's all factory with no chip or programmer. That's about all I hear from most Ford Owners. My Duramax gets 20 around town and 26hy.I did have the computer reprogramed at 60,000. I gained almost 4 mpg by doing that! I was able to reprogram my 2004 Duramax but you can't do anything to help the mileage in any of them from 2010 and newer.

Even though I'm GM all the way [my son works at a chevy dealership in the paint shop, handy when you forget to drop the tailgate on the fifth wheel when unhooking]But I think Ford has Chevy and Dodge beat hands down on the interior. I know that's not this thread, just thought I'd throw it in!
