MM 5 start steering problem

am posting this for a mechanic that is working on my Moline.

Problem: Power Steering is not working.

What has checked out OK:

The pump on the front - drivers side is OK, it has good pressure.
The front cylinder that actually moves from side to side is OK.

So he tried to replace a valve that is in the front thinking that was the problem - but it made no difference.

What he has found is that it won"t build pressure unless you hit a remote lever with nothing on it. Then the pressure goes from 300 pounds to 900 pounds.

So he is stumped. I told him I would post here in case anyone had run across this situation and has an idea on what to check next.

Did your power steering just suddenly stop working? Narrow front or wide front? (stuck spindles) I believe there is a valve in the pump just above the pto shaft you could check.

What??? There is no pump in the front on the driver's side on an M5. Unless someone has seriously modified the original program. We're going to need some more information if we're to be of any help.

Wide front end. As best I can recollect it went out gradually. It isn"t used very often.

I can lift the front end off the ground with the bucket and it steers freely. So nothing is in a bind.

Well... maybe I am using the wrong terminology then. There is a device at the drivers side front where hydraulic lines go in and then out to the steering cylinder underneath. Anyway the mechanic tells me it is OK.

The most likely culprit is the control valve assembly, front left. When you steer, you are moving a finger one way or the other, inside that assembly. That finger is moving a piston so as to allow fluid, under pressure, to one side or the other of the steering cylinder. It sounds as if that finger is not getting the job done. It moves very little so eventual wear does render it ineffective. You may have to increase the available travel in the worm shaft. An IT manual will give the spec. for that travel, increase it.

Have him check the flow divider valve on the back of the hydraulic pump. It splits the flow from the pump with part going to steering and the rest for 3 point and remotes. The fact that operating a remote will give you higher steering pressure tells me that the flow divider is not working properly.

It took a while but the mechanic finally got around to fixing it last week. You all were right - the flow control valve at the rear of the tractor had a piece of metal in it.

Just wanted to follow up and confirm in case anyone else encountered this problem.
