pierce governor problem

Am working on a big cube U. I have a Stromberg carb w/ a 2" throttle plate. governor will not control speed. engine idles fine; but; when I start bringing rpm up; it goes wild. Have adjusted everything in ( and some out) of sight to no avail. what is wrong???????????????

Make sure your your governor control rod is 7/8-1" from the center of the shaft for the butterfly on the carb.

I had the same problem this spring, but not only would the engine run wild it would fall on its face under load. I realize it sounds like going the wrong way but at the advice of a puller in ohio I tapered the back of the weights on the old U governor and have excellent governor response since, and it clears the carb better.
