advice on rebuilding a U

Greetings,
I have a Farmhand F-11loader on a farmall M. It is not enough tractor (long irrelevant story). With the loader frame crossbridge it would be really inconvienient on a "modern" row crop style tractor. Have to climb on over 3 point.

I also have a U with heavy Swartz wide front end and 15 inch wide 38 in rear tires. Bad part it hasn't run In 25 years and no power steering, But it would be really easy to climb on.

With water/weights l think this should be enough tractor to load big bales with the grapple on the loader.

Asking for experience:

1) would it be enough tractor handle loader and bale?
2) Is the engine crankcase strong enough to handle the weight or should I look for a later framed tractor like a 670 super wheatland?
3) should I rebuild the 283 or find a 336 (would it bolt up?) or some other combination of Moline engine components.
4) would a chalynn/beh lin power steering system work
5) Cost -my guess is something on the order of 2000 to 2500 would get close (Exclusive of rear tires)

An M670 wheatland would definitely be a better tractor. Your "U" tractor has a hand clutch. A foot clutch is better for loader work, because your hands have enough to do operating the loader. A loader is tough on a front axle, so the M670 wheatland (standard) front axle would be tougher. The 670 wheatland is a little more scarce. Also the M670 would have improved hydraulics and capacity. Email me with any more questions.

It'd be better to find an M5, M602 or like MMdiesel said, an M670. Although there is plenty you could do to get your U more power then ever needed, it wouldn't be cheap. 720 cubes isn't unheard of in a U, but for loader work that would be unwise.
