If you are referring to the ones used between the jugs and crankcase on a 283. They are necessary when putting 4 5/8" jugs on the old 4 1/4" motor to make up the correct deck height.
 
A tape measure does not care what fuel source you are using. The pin heights of the pistons from 4 1/4" to 4 5/8" are different by the amount of your shim. Cutting the tops of the 4 5/8" pistons is a cleaner way to make that conversion. Jeff
