pitted bearings

These are new bearings for a 585 diesel. Opened the box and found 2 sets must have gotten water on them at some time. A little worried about using them, but my be hard to find more. Polished them with scotchbrite but can still feel the pits.

As long as there are no sharp edges on the pits and they cover no more area than shown I would use them, if you cannot get the seller to take them back. But I would have tried that before sanding.

Since your working on a 585, do you know what it takes to overhaul one? Found a 2-150 in need of a overhaul and wanna know how much money you'll put into the motor alone. Also how hard are the parts to find for it. I haven't bought the 2-150 yet, just looked at it.

had a teacher in college that built racing engines and he told me that pits ain't no big deal its bumps ya gotta worry about, had him grind a crank for a 350 chevy that had pitting of similar size and he said it would be ok

I'm sure sorry I looked up those prices. I was in denial. My Agco bill was $2300. I couldn't find the invoices, I know I sent the Agco ones in and got a "free" Hesston jacket and cap, but I thought I kept copies. When I priced the parts at Welter's Farm Supply in February 2012 this is what it cost:

Pistons $300 ea- I think I got the last set of +.040 available
Main bearings $275
Rings $360 for 6
Rod brgs $30 ea.
Don't have a price on the gaskets.

Machine Shop- Farmland Tractor at Tangent, OR
turn crank $450
Boring $240
Valve job $250

Should have used the money for a down payment on another tractor, but its my brother's tractor and he really likes it. It's been a long process to put it back together.

Here's a picture of my son helping to install pistons.

Alright, doesn't sound as bad as I thought, tHanks for the help. just curous what model are you working on, is it a G1350 or 1355 or a4t or are you just putting that 585 in something.

G1355, you also need to keep in mind all of the "other" issues that may arise on one of these engines. My overhaul was similar to above, but the incedentals like the fan shaft ($250-300) and water pump rebuilds, misc other gaskets/seals, clutch/flywheel, and so on is what racked the cost up in mine. I figured by the time i was all said and done i was close to $6000-$7000 withOUT counting my labor.

Yeah I know, but I was just after what the parts I know I"ll need first will cost. That"s why I was wondering I"ve heard that 5-7000 range, and was wondering if that was just for the pistons, rings etc or if that was all said in done.
