most of the antifreeze in the oil pan

I just got my 1847 utu lp running this week. Went to start it and checked the oil and it is way over full with antifreeze. I did not install lower block gaskets just used sealant, but if i remember right there is no water to seal there anyway. I did install a new water pump seal. I don"t believe the antifreeze is getting into the cyls. but i will pull the plugs and see. There was alot of antifreeze in the oil so it must just run in there all day long, so its a pretty significant leak, just not sure where to begin. Thanks

I bought an M5 that had sat a couple years that had antifreeze in the oil. I took out the oil filter canister, as I could on that pan, and looked up towards the water pump. I saw a little trail through the oil, so assumed the antifreeze was coming from the water pump. I think I just opened the weep hole and greased it and havent had a problem since. Point being, if you can take off one of the covers on the side of the crankcase you may, may be able to see where it is coming from. Not real familiar on the seals on those, possibly might be coming from there. I know the ZAs had to wear in place a little before they sealed but they leaked externally.

Well I checked my impeller seal and found out that I installed it backwards and broke off the 4 plastic tabs that fit into the impeller. Easy fix but costly, onto the next challenge I guess.

So You are saying maybe the Antifreeze leaks from the water pump which would be repairable. My M602 has a problem solved by leakseal(temporary ay best) and we assumed a block or head was cracked and leaking. I think they were magnaflexed when put on and never could locate a crack. When I tear it down I am going to try to see what area seems to be problem even if I have to presurize the coolant system. It sure is not a good problem to have on something you depend on to function on a regulair basis.

It is a possibility for it leaking from the waterpump, atleast that is what was wrong with mine. I have two M5s and both of them have an external crack on the front head just to the left of the soft plug, towards the distributor. I ended up polishing it with a wire wheel and using some JB Weld on it. That lasts about 2-3 years maybe more...and it works. Do you get antifreeze in the oil?

Yes I get coolant in the oil. For a few seasons we put water in for summer use only and the procedure is fill up the radiator and run the tractor and warm it and put about 2 tubes of the aluminized stop leak in and the everything was fine for a while. If this was not done then lots of coolant would be in the oil by the next day just sitting there. Last time I did it with antifreeze and it seem to be okay thru this winter as I been using the tractor a lot but now had developed a knock so the little problem may be a major one now. Have not drained oil yet but level was good and pressure is 30-40 which is good.cleddy

When you change the oil you can try what I did to see if you can see anything "in" the motor by taking out the canister that the oil filter sets in, in the pan. I think there is just two screws that hold it in place and if I remember correctly be aware of the square O ring seal behind it. If you take a flashlight and look up towards the waterpump area you might be able to see if it is coming from there. The tractor would probably have to be sitting a day or two to give it a chance to seep. There may not be clear visible signs but even seeing a drop of green antifreeze might be able to give you an idea. Make sure the weep hole under the waterpump isnt plugged as well. You may have a little more than just a leak from the sounds of it. Let me know what you get figured out.
