I believe all U's before 1947 had the same 5th gear as the UDLX,which was advertised at 30 MPH at around 1200RPM. If you were running higher RPM,then you should be going over 30. The UDLX had a governor override for road use,if I remember right?
 
I don't think any u would go as fast as a udlx. But I could be wrong. Here's the udlx gears and speed. Pretty sure there the only MM that will do 40 factory.

Can someone explain how they shifted them to get to top speed? Ive always wondered how they did.
 
I don't know, but wouldn't it just be like shifting to any other gear, I'm sure you'd probebly have to shift rolling, starting in 5th at a stop would probebly kill it, or you'd have to start off wide open, I bet it still bog down a lot. When I get one ill let you come drive it, might be 20 years, but I'm gonna own one before I die. That's one of my goals
 
That sounds like a deal. That is what I would guess too as even an older U with the fast road gear had a hard time starting out.
 
Udlx used an extra gear and countershaft. When lever was shifted both contershafts were thrown in neutral position. The added shaft used an added gear for 5th. The governor was also thrown wide open to achieve the 38 MPH.
 
we have owned 2 of them and I drove both on the road and yes it is a big jump into the higher gear and it takes a long time to get up to full speed. Actually I guess you have to be half crazy ( or on lots of medication ) ha ha to take a 75 yr old tractor down the road at near 40 mph ...but I have seen it done :)
 
Hey schrocky, how are you doing? Glad to see you on here again. I figured it was a little more than put it in high gear and go. Are they shifted into "high" at a certain speed or something?
 
Greg, Same Ring and Pinion and other gears, The did have a split counter shaft that could be put out of mesh. The ring and pinion is the same as red nose and other early U's. Its a 2.52:1 ratio, I think the Overide assy was simply a governor bypass/overide and the engine had to turn over governed RPM to achieve the higher mph. Mathmatically at Governed speed of 1200rpm only puts them at about 23-25mph
