I took my UTS out on the road today for the first time. I started in fourth then after a little bit came to a stop and put it in 5th gear. 5th gear is so high if I wasn't facing down a slight hill it would not have taken off. Once I got moving I could believe how fast I was going, the front end is worn and it started shaking bad. Not sure how fast I was going but my wife and neighbor said I was flying. I have driven mostly Farmall's and their top speed is some where around 15mph. My question is how fast is 5th on a UTS and why is it so fast?

I know the feeling. Ive drove my cousins UTU down the road in 5th bucking a 30 mph wind with the front wheels wobbling away, and I wasnt even wide open, is a scary ride. I think the older U series was about 18 to 20mph. The later ones were slowed down a little.

I did some digging in the archives, it looks like 5th gear can be as high as 25mph. I have 16.9-30's I know I had to be doing around 20mph.

Just think what a udlx would feel like, I wanna drive one. My luck I'd buy one, and me I'd have to see how fast it went and I'd put it in the ditch or something dumb lol. Always have wanted one, but its gonna be spendy. Hopefully I get one before I die.

We had 2 of those fast rascals. One had a Farmhand on it. Used to get it rolling in a lower gear and "speed shift" up to 5th and get really going.

First UTU that I owned was on 14.9 x 38" " full sized" tires, Oversized Alum. pistons and the Gov. screw backed out a little. That "U" was clocked at 26 to 27 MPH on the hiway by different rigs.Like others said, it was 'fast'.
Got stopped once in a 20MPH zone by a cop, talked my way out of the ticket. clint

When I was a kid I was hauling a wagon load of soybeans to town with Dad's UB, and I actually passed another tractor on the road! By the time he got to the elevator, I was dumped and ready to leave. You should have heard him grumble! :D

So does a UDLX have an overdrive gear? I noticed an extra lever but I didn"t know what it was for. For fun we over rode the governor on our "40 U just to see. Smooth as silk up to 40 mph but the old girl was really talking.

Our ''47 UTU will only run about 16-17 mph, the Farmall M is a little faster, so I guess we didn't get the fast tranny one. I remember one back in the 1940's a guy in our area had would outrun anything but a Silver King.

Alan, answering your ques. This was before SMV s were thought of. In fact in Ill., this was before their " red flag" law was passed, which was before SMV s.
I was on a 1940 UTU that had been a " Del-Monte" tractor. clint

So Im guessing if a person was asked "Do you know how fast you were going?" You can say Nope..and be right lol. We go by a Del Monte place in Sleepy Eye on our way to the Le Sueur swap meets.

The operator's manual says 14.8 mph in 5th gear with 12 x 38 tires, but you're right....it seems a lot faster.
