I have a G 900 project coming up and I am looking for some advice what to look for on this tractor. The owner says that the clutch is still good but it grinds when shifting gears. I haven't drove it yet, but I am thinking the pilot bearing is bad. Also, what is the lever on the right side of the tractor for? Is it a hand lever for the clutch or is it two speed unit? Thanks in advance, Tim

The lever on the right side is the Ampli-torque lever which on most all of the G900s were a two speed hi and low shift, similiar to IH. Not sure if any of them ever had 3 speed torques in them. How do you mean exactly when you say it grinds when shifting gears? It does take a while after depressing the clutch for it to stop before you can shift gears without any grinding, and in my experience a little longer than most other makes, and longer than you would think. It is that way on my G950 which is basically the same. If it doesnt stop after waiting say...30 seconds then there may be other problems. It is normal for it to shift harder in high range with the torque, as the operators manuals state, shifting is easier in low range. I believe they are supposed to be started in high range and on older models were always good to shut them off in high range, as I was told by a knowledgable MM guy, otherwise if the engine kicks back it would weaken the springs in the torque.

This tractor is uncharted territory for me as I have only run John Deeres and there are very few Moline tractors in this area. I have not had a chance to drive the tractor and see what may be the problem with it. I am just trying to get some pointers for things that are normal or abnormal for this model so I don't waste my time and his money. It's a nice original tractor but it has sat for the better part of 20 years in the barn which made me wonder if the crank pilot bearing had some corrosion or dirt/clutch dust in it making the transmission input shaft spin causing the gear clash that he speaks of.

That is very possible. Rust / corrosion and or dirt on splines and in bearings can do alot of odd things. Keep us updated. There are alot of people on here that are very knowledgable on MMs. Where are you located?

I believe some of the G900's had a 3 speed amplitorque. Its also important to know that low range can slip or not work at all in these tractors or (any MM) with an amplitorque. Low range is when the lever is pulled back (toward the driver). Also note that the tractor will "free wheel" in low range. We have 3 G900's diesels along with about 30 other MM's. Feel free to email me with any questions.

Thanks for the information. Anything that you can think of that I may need to know is greatly appreciated. Like I said this is uncharted territory for me. It will be a month or so before I tear into it because I am just getting started planting sugar beets and still have to plant corn, soybeans, and black beans and I want the shop to be open for the other stuff I am sure I will break. I also have a line on an original service manual which should help. I will do my best to keep you posted on the results.
