MM 1355 diesel injector timing

We goofed. We removed the injector pump to have it serviced and after it was removed, turned the engine over. I know dumb, but there it is.

Is there a way to align #1 to 4" ATDC (manual specs) to install the pump without tearing the front end apart? It looks like I have to remove the radiator, fan, accessories and fly wheel cover to be able to see the timing marks in the manual I am reading.

Thanks for any help.

Dave.

The flywheel should be marked. There is a window in the cast iron bellhousing on the left side of the tractor.

The flywheel is marked but you need to know when #1 is on compression stroke. or you can have the pump 180 degrees off. If you have the injectors out you can cover the #1 injector hole as you turn the engine over. when you feel pressure it is on compression stroke and you can line up the mark on the flywheel. If the injectors are still in you can remove the front valve cover and watch the rocker arms as you turn it over. When #1 intake valve closes it will be starting the compression stroke.

MMfan and Cliff, thanks a bunch. I was hoping and thought I remembered an external mark. I think I can find TDC for #1 OK, but did not want to tear down the front end if I didn't have to.

Hey Jason, the flywheel on Eric's tractor had no marks, plus he used an injection pump that turned backwards. They had to figure out the firing order, and timed the pump by watching the valves. Lewis Moeller is a decent diesel mechanic.

I am still missing something. I looked at the tractor today and do not see a bell housing or a window to the fly wheel. On the H balancer/pulley, I see a mark but nothing to reference it to, ie an index plate. The mark may be a ding from a wrench or rock.

Unless I am missing something, I can't use the injector pump to time it because the pump has been off and rebuilt and the tractor has been turned over while the pump was off. The injector pump drive gear is not aligned to the fly wheel-cam shaft and the #1 compression stroke.

Looking at the service manual, If I disassemble the front of the tractor and expose the flywheel, there should be an index mark on the flywheel and the cam gear that will time the crank to the cam. If I turn the engine over until I am on the compression stroke in #1 with both valves closed, then how do I determine 4' ATDC? There does not appear to be a scale on the crank-cam alignment (although I am just looking at a picture in the book).

If I could figure that, I could install the injector pump and follow the manual to static time it.

I have not disassembled the crank-cam gears so it is on the same setting it has been on since 1972.

What am I not seeing here.

Dave.

Look through the big round hole left frame rail at back Flat piece of metal in the middle of it with one or two screws holding it on Remove screws pull little plate It is about the size of a silver dollar That is your timing Window has a pointer in the center that lines up with numbers on fly wheel

OK. I've got it. Thanks to mm fan and smoking minnie and everyone who responded. You were right, I just couldn't see the forest for the trees.

Yeah, static timing will be easy now that I know where to look. No need to pull the front end stuff off.

Picked up the rebuilt injector pump today. Pricey little things, but that's why they last 41 years and make our lives so much fun I guess.

Later guys.

Dave, thanks again.
