MM 445 governor

Thanks in advance for any help. I have a 445 and the governor is not functioning. Think I need a new one or repair. Is this a major repair job? I know you have to access it thru the crankcase.
 
Yes it can be removed fairly easily and you can send it out to be repaired ..... I recommend sending it to Matt Gual of Motec Engineering..... he specializes in molines and is great at carb and governor rebuilds
 
I believe you have to take off the front pulley to access the governor on the 445s. I know someone on here has done that before and hopefully will chime in.
 
The most likely problem is that the linkage between the governor & the carb needs adjusted. Over the years, I have seen two things happen to the governor. The screw that holds the fork to the shaft can come loose rendering the governor non-functional. The balls in the governor original to the 445 get flat spots worn on them which causes the governor to not work smoothly & sometimes causes surging. I check to see if the governor is working & simply needs adjusting by disconnecting the rod from the governor to the carb then while holding the gov arm & the carb linkage so it doesn't go too fast, have a helper start the engine. While running, if you hold the gov arm rearward, & rev the engine with the carb, the gov should try to push the gov arm toward the front of the engine. If it does, the gov is working & the linkage needs adjusted. If the problem is surging, you will have to at least replace the balls in the gov or replace it with one of the later style governors. To get the gov out, you will need to remove the front of the tractor, the pulley & front cover behind the pulley then the setscrew in the yoke.

The governor is behind the front pulley and can easily be removed after taking the seal cover off. The new governor will look different than the original. And be bought from Steiner tractor or Riverdale farms.
