M5 PTO Clutch adjustment

Hey fellas, I have an M5 and PTO clutch needs adjustment. I have the owner's manual and see how they say to adjust. That looks to be a pretty tricky maneuver. Have any of yall ever tried to adjust that thing? From looking at the access, it looks like a pretty tight area to work. Lastly, it says if you can push in the lock pin, then you should turn the adjusting ring clockwise. Is that clockwise looking toward the back of the tractor or looking toward the front of the tractor. Any comments would be appreciated. thanks

I dont recall at the moment what the manual says, but I do know I tried to adjust it by taking the "plug" out of the top cover....I have two M5s and an M602...and I have yet to be able to remove the plug to adjust it. There just isnt enough room to remove the plug. If you can get the one in yours out it shouldnt be that hard to adjust. I have adjusted the pto in my G950 through the same plug and it isnt hard to do once you get that far. I'll have to look in the book on clockwise or counterclockwise as I dont remember off hand. If the plug on the M series had been about 1/4" farther ahead it might have worked. The edge of the plug ends up hitting the tel-o-flo when you try to remove it so I ended up taking the lift off and the rear cover to adjust it.

I know it seems like a big deal but it's really not. You'll be a happier man to pull the lift assembly off and adjust. That will remove the clockwise question because you won't put it back together without knowing that the objective has been accomplished. You may also find, as I did once, a broken or damaged fork - or other things to tend to while you're in there.

I agree with Curt. When I got into my M5, like Im sure most are, the set screw was loose which allows too much shaft end play. I wouldnt have found it without taking the lift off. If yours is an earlier M5 (hydraulic pump with one line coming out of it) I believe there is a connecting pipe from the tel-o-flo to rear end you have to keep an eye on when removing.

Thanks fellas. I think you are right about taking whole hydraulic unit off. The more I look at it, I'm not sure what kind of skinny wrench I could get on that plug anyway. I was looking at it today and already figuring a way to get tractor under a hoist so I wouldn't have the heave that thing off by hand. I've had one of those tel-o-flow units off one of my other molines (4 Star) and they ain't light. Thanks again for your input.

Alan,
I was just re-reading your post and mine is a 61 model with the pump bolted to the back so there probably is a pipe going to the pump. How do I go about it? Do I need to unbolt the pump from the back first? I'm afraid if I lift the unit up and the pipe is attached to the back, I'll break or bend something. Glad you mentioned it because that makes sense with location of pump. If you know how to go about it, I'm all ears.

The pump can stay on. I think it was maybe just the 1960 models that have the pipe, but I will have to look in the book to make sure. If your pump has just one small line coming out on the right side of it (when facing forward - 5 Star in picture but early M5 used the same pump) it will have the pipe between the tel-o-flo lift and rear end housing. I think it is about a 1/2 diameter and about 1 or 1 1/4" long. If your hydraulic pump has external plumbing with a large line on each side it wont have the pipe.

Forgot to add....if it does have the pipe as long as you go straight up off of the rear end with the lift and know the pipe is there you shouldnt have any problems, just keep an eye out for it. I have one to do myself on my M5.

Brad, it would be very helpful to buy a manual. As far as the hyd on your tractor goes, this tractor is over 50 years old, it could have internal or external plumbing, these systems have been known to have been swapped from early to late and vise/versa, but makes no difference to the PTO work you are faced with. Remove everything above the diff. housing carefully(it's not light) and observe the pto assy. You really need a manual, Dale, River Dale Farms, 920 295 3278(we have parts you may need.)

Thanks again Alan. Mine has the single line like the one you pictured. I think I'm going to borrow my neighbor's engine hoist if it has enough reach and just slowly creep it up after I get it unbolted. As far as the manual, are you referring to an IT shop manual? thanks again.

Hey Dale, I just realized it was you referring to a manual and not Alan. Anyway, thank you too for your reply. I guess I need to start reading a little more carefully. Now I'll ask you what I accidently asked Alan, are you talking about the IT manual? Also, I actually have several molines. Do you have new/used parts for them??

The I/T manual is very helpful and easy to get. We have most of what you'll need, new or reconditioned, best to call for help and/or parts, 920 295 3278, Dale and Doug.
