jet star timing

Hi Folks,
Posted a message on this forum and fixed & welded
the sterring sector shaft on my dads brown
jet star, rebuilt the steering valve, power steering for first time in over 40 years.
Question.....I think the timing is off, replaced
the plugs, wires, points, rebuilt carb, idles
fine, when you have a load pops and misses unless
you pull the choke.
Manual says to check timing at a certain rpm
and adjust, tractor doesnt have a tachometer,
can I just borrow a timing light and try without
a tach?
thanks
Jim

how old is the gas ? , is this a daily runner ? or has it set for 2 or more monthes without running ?.., If it were mine i would draw all the old gas out and replace with couple gallon of 93 octane, maybe a quarter cup of seafoam and or lucas fuel stabilizer,,if one hour of running shows no improvement , maybe try those other ideas ,, dont overlook the valves

Thanks,
we run it every week to go out in the woods
and cut firewood, I can try some of that
lucas stuff and will try adjusting the valves
when its warm

sure sounds like a fuel problem, quantity or quality. Perhaps rust in bottom of inside of carb, assuming it's a cast iron Marvel Schebler like on my 4star. I have occasion to adjust main jet needle on mine - due to rust accumulations
