445 ampli-torc 2 different styles???

mm fun

I took the ampli-torc out of my 445 today and found it has the same thing the parts book shows. Part number 10R924A this is the one with the 8 rollers and springs. Took the one out of my parts tractor witch is a 445 also and the ampli-torc is different it has a whole bunch of small rollers that lock on to the hub and looks like there is a different bearing on the shaft that goes into the transmission. I did not get the serial numbers I will try to post them latter. Was the one with the small rollers an update over the one with only 8 rollers. I will be putting the one with the 8 rollers back in the machine. Just wondering what the difference is and what one was stronger?

The one with the smaller rollers is a later design that uses a sprag clucth in place of the rollers and springs. You are correct when you said the taper roller going into the transmission is different from the earlier tapered roller.

My guess is someone put a later one in. Some early 445 did not have the hole/cover to adjust the amp.

Funny thing I found in an I & T manual about just that was the specifications to mark over and down so far on the housing and drill a hole and tap it for use with a plug. I would be leary myself about getting in just the right spot. Its not like you can erase it and start over.

There is an old MM Service letter on where & How to add this access/adjustment hole in the early 445's.

I think the later sprag clutch type is supposed to be more reliable than the early type, but more expensive to repair. You could buy all the parts to upgrade to the new style. Dad did that to our Jet Star and M5 in the late 1960's
