ZA Rod Bearing Question

I"m trying to figure out my options to low oil pressure and apparent worn crank journals on my ZA. Following are the specs. from my ZA only Dealer Service Manual (not an I&T manual covering several different models):

- If journals = 2.6245-2.6250 use standard bearings
- If journals = 2.5995-2.6000 use .0025 undersize bearing
- If journals > .005 under then grind to 2.6045-2.6050 and use .020 undersize bearing

Is this a misprint or am I missing something because the spec. for .0025 under bearing is less than for .020 under. BTW, my journals mic at about 2.621, are not out of round, and are clean with no scoring on either the journals or the bearings, so I"m thinking that .0025 under bearing should get me to an acceptable clearance. Plasti-gauge indicated clearance of approx. .005, which is .002 outside the acceptable range of .001-.003. I don"t know about the mains but I"m hoping tightening up the rods will get me the oil pressure I need. Am I on the right track?

the spec for 2 1/2 thou. has to be less than for 20 thou. brg. with .020 taken off crank it is a smaller diameter.
if you have a clearance of .005 then probably need to grind crank to .020 undersize, as have not seen .0025 work because the crank wears in an egg shape and there may be a tight spot when turning engine over. you will have to check this very carefully in about 4 spots.

.0025 Brg. are hard to find. And since Don has them go with it. They will work fine I have done it many times.

Have you ever run into the problem of out-of-round crank wear such that .0025s won"t work as described in the post by rustred?

You have to mic your crank. And lets say it is .001 out of round. If the high and low measurement are very close to allow you the oil clearence (.001-.003) you need with the .0025 there will be no problem. Nobody ever intended to pull a crank and grind it .0025. MM furnish these bearings for a good crank that had slight normal wear. If you want to double check for your own satisfaction. Plastigage it like you mentioned. Do it twice. once with the crank in the vertical position and again at 90 degrees from there on the down stroke side.
