M670 Super - Diesel

I bought a MM670 Super a few years back, mainly use it to run round bales out to the cows but have recently had to use it intensely to chisel 80 acres of land. Keep it fresh with oil, filters..etc. Was reading in a manual about cleaning the energy cells to reduce smoke, improve power. Wondering how prudent this would be to do and should I include it in a regular servicing? I can say that the tractor runs pretty well though it is hard to start in cold weather and have to use a little ether. Once started, it runs pretty well but there seems to be a little miss in it from time to time. Anyone have any advice for what else to do in a regular PM of this tractor? Thank you.
 
Ive only been in to one MM diesel, my G950. It missed and smoked alot when I got it. It seems that is common when they are warming up. Something you can try "CAERFULLY" is to place the back part your finger on and off on the energy cell caps to check the heat on them. If there is one that is cool or cooler than the others that is the cylinder to check BUT from what Ive read, rarely is it the energy cell its self but more injector / injection pump issue. On my 950 all the energy cells were good, but the injection pump was bad. The injectors themselves werent real bad, but there was considerable carbon build up by the injector tips. Im sure there are more people on here that will know more.
 
I'm glad that you made that inquiry, because my M5 also farts and spits when cold but warms up to a perfect idle. I've had her for almost 2 years and only put about an hour on her because I have to many tractors and lack of time. I have read on this site that some Minie engines operate that way, with a slight miss when cold.
 
My G vi spits and misses when cold, it seems to miss worse with the pump timing advanced a little to make more HP. TO me it makes me smile since I know it is a bear when she warms up. minnies have a personality of their own.
 
Thanks for the comments guys. I believe mine is a 67 by the color (yellow). It also has a cab on it that the previous owner had put an air conditioner in. I haven't really had any trouble with it - knock on my wooden head - and from the comments I've read on this board, it must be that they all share the sounding like an old sewing machine when they are warming up trait. I checked all the caps today and they felt equally warm to the touch. So perhaps I don't need to do anything but I would think after 46 years, some type of service would be needed.
 
I think the best thing to do with a diesel is get it warmed up and work the snot out of it. They like that, and it blows the carbon and soot out of the system.
 
Easy method to clean the energy cells is to remove the fuel injectors and access the energy cells thru these open ports with a medium length, very small diameter nylon bottle brush. I've done it and it is a lot easier than removing the energy cells.
