MM UTS Flywheel Markings

I noticed the other day on our 1947 MM UTS that the flywheel is marked "DC2-3". What does this mean? I am presuming that maybe it means that the flywheel should be put on with the mark lined up with the bell housing mark when pistons #2 and 3 are on top dead center but this does not seem normal too me because typically I am used to having #1 on TDC when the timing marks are lined up. Any clarification would be appreciated.

Also, when setting the valve tappets on our 1967 MM U302 I noticed that it's flywheel was on in such a why that the same timing marks were lined up as noted above when pistons #2 and 3 where on TDC. This motor had been rebuilt years ago and I am wondering if this is correct or if it was put on 180 degrees off where it should be (so piston #1 is on TDC)?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Spin the engine over 180 degrees and you should find DC-1-4 stamped on the flywheel. Probably under years of oil and grease if it is anything like mine. I don"t know if the flywheel could be installed 180 degrees off or not, but I wouldn"t think so.

You are correct about the DC1-4 markings on the other side of the flywheel. Thank you very much for the clarification.

Do you happen to know anything about how the flywheel on a U302 should be put on (i.e. DC markings lined up on bellhousing when #1 & #4 pistons are TDC or when #2 & #3 are TDC?

Thanks again for all your help.

I am sure others would know far more than me, I am only familiar with a U. I would assume that the flywheel cannot be installed incorrectly. At worst maybe installed 180degrees off. If you pull the spark plugs you should be able to tell if #1 is coming up to TDC on compression before/when the DC-1-4 mark shows.
If the U302 has the large (5"-6"?) opening in the bell housing to the clutch it should have a little notch pointer on the left side closest to the flywheel.
Good luck, hopefully somebody that knows a little more about U302s can help you out if you need it.
