4Star Power Steering Problem

I get a little help to the right, no help to the left. Here's what I've done. I switched the control valve attached to the worm gear with the one from my working M5. The M5 performed fine with the 4Star valve assy., the 4Star did not change using the M5 assy. I have a pressure gauge in line on the 4Star. When I turn all the way to the right, at the stopping point, I have 700 PSI on my gauge. I believe I have good flow from the pump and back to the reservoir as indicated by the turbulence within the reservoir. I'm about to pull the worm gear housing and go at that with my IT manual at my side. Not looking forward to that. Could I be missing something else. I'm guessing that my valve assy. is not effectively directing flow to the steering piston.
 
Just an odd thought...have you jacked up the front end and checked the spindles for movement? I would think a person should be able to leave the lines loose or off by the valve for the oil to bleed out so you arent working against the oil, or take the tie rods off individually and check each side separately, that might be even better. That is all I can think of at the moment. I have one M5 with "GPS"....(good power steering) the other M5 is a different story....nuff said.
 
Been through that Alan, and the piston seals. Blocked up it steers fine. It steers almost OK when driving it, just steers slow
 
It gets "interesting" trying to figure it out doesnt it. I did have a problem on my M5 with some piece of debris in the valve in the pump that slowed mine down, but mine steered slow in both directions. Ill keep thinking...
 
Thanks. What really gets me is the IT manual does not address MY steering valve. The manual tells me to attach a pressure gauge to it. There is no provision for a gauge on my valve. I know what valve they are referring to, I had one like it on my 445 and my UB Special. But the valves on both my M5 and 4Star are different, they take the threaded fittings on the end of the tubes, no O-rings and a clip. I had to affix a gauge in the feed line between the pump and the steering valve and 3/8" inverted flare fittings are a bit hard to come by.
 
I have to check my one M5 with a gauge as well. If the early M670's are the same set up I do have a shop manual on one so I will look in there too. Yes those IT manuals are...somewhat helpful...at times, but dont cover everything the way they should.
 
Had a M5 doing the same thing. On a factory recall they had put a steering shaft holder on the rod to the worm gear. It had locked up and wasn't letting the steering shaft work in and out to activate the trigger on the power steering valve. It would let it move one way but not enough the other way.

Just wanted to add..I know if the steering knuckle doesnt slide on the splines that affects it as well. It seems like there are alot of things to add up to getting it to work properly....but there are so many... I suppose that is why they put the extra steering shaft supports by the valve on the first M670s.

Success. I got the shim pack right but also went with your
advice. It all works now. Thanks Del, your explanation makes
sense. I may go even a little wider.
