I am looking for a water pump for a 1950 MM U. I have a slight trace of antifreeze in the oil and seems to be coming from the water pump.

Thanks in advance.

hi, your water pump can be rebuilt. i work for a rebuilder and we do them all the time. your pump needs a new water pump seal and most likely new bearings or bushings put in at the time of the rebuild. it would be cheaper than a new pump. if you would like the address or phone number to the rebuilder i work at to ethier talk to them or ship it to them just let me know if i can help.

haird350,
The water pump on a U is part of the engine. To fix the water pump, you just have to replace the #KE534A pump seal.

Remove the #KE502E cover plate by removing the six 5/16" nuts. Remove the 3/16" pin holding the #KE504C impeller. Spin the impeller clockwise to remove it. The #KE534A water pump seal kit is in the center of the impeller.

Look at the face of the bearing assembly where the seal rides. Make sure that there are no radial striations. Circular ridges are okay. If the face is chewed up, just turn about 0.005" off to level things up. There is no need for perfection. If you did pull the #KE5524A bearing carrier; replace the #KE532 oil seal that is pressed in the oil side of the carrier. I always replace that oil seal as a matter of habit.

Remove all of the old parts from the impeller and toss them. The old Schwitzer-Cummins type water pump seals were a handful of parts and were never any good anyway. The new type seal is a one piece affair and just drops in. It should outlast most of us and it double seals on the impeller well bottom and the shaft. Reverse the procedure and you have a new pump in ten minutes. Taking your family to McDonalds costs more than fixing those old water pumps, and there is less indigestion.

Classic Minneapolis-Moline; designed by geniuses to be repaired by monkeys, like me. If you need pictures, drop me a line. I keep them on my computer to send to friends and to refresh my fading memory.

Take care.

Charlie was very helpful when I did my 1949. The original solid metal pin was rusted real bad on the ends and would just mushroom when i tried to hammer it out. I waited for Santa to bring me a dremel, and then ground the softened ends off flush with the threads and then the pin pushed out easily with a pin punch. use the proper sized pin punch from a reputable source too.
Instead of the original type solid tapered pin, use a stainless roll pin, which i believe comes with the water pump seal kit. I think Charlie told me the original design from the 20s used a copper cotter key.

Hi Charlie, I need to get your web page address. I am looking for the same part mentioned in this post - #KE534A water pump seal kit for my "new to me" minneaplis Moline tractor. However, i cannot send you a private message as this feature does not appear to be working at this time. If you can send me an email or message that would be great! you can contact me at the following email: [email protected]. Thanks and I hope to hear from you soon.

If you was to wander over to jetstar dot minneapolis dash moline dot com you cold find a whole page of part sources and Charlie's complete info is there.
