My best guess is that your starter had A short circut in the windings that caused it to burn up. That would also explain why it spun so fast. 12V in a 6V starter is going to make spin faster ( maybe half again as fast) , but noway like an air starter. I was telling another mechanic about our discussion and he said he also has used 6V starters on 12V for 20 years or more.

| | Thanks to all you guys for your informative input I really appreciate it and feel much more comfortable now in completing this conversion. I recent came across an article on this website which speaks to the start debute you guys were having and I thought I would direct you all too it to return a favour so to speak.
