Has anyone done this or know the proper procedure to complete this conversion? I have a good 12V generator off of a MM GVI that I was hoping to use on the UTS if possible but would like to know what else needs to be converted.A detailed step-by-step procedure or assistance of any kind would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

I took the time to check out the article you referred to. And for the most part agree with it's content. In your case you will not have to change polarity if you are using the generator off a GVI since it is positive ground the same as your U.

My best guess is that your starter had A short circut in the windings that caused it to burn up. That would also explain why it spun so fast. 12V in a 6V starter is going to make spin faster ( maybe half again as fast) , but noway like an air starter. I was telling another mechanic about our discussion and he said he also has used 6V starters on 12V for 20 years or more.

| | Thanks to all you guys for your informative input I really appreciate it and feel much more comfortable now in completing this conversion. I recent came across an article on this website which speaks to the start debute you guys were having and I thought I would direct you all too it to return a favour so to speak. I couldn't just add the link for some reason but it is under "Articles, then the Maintenance section, and it is titled converting 6V to 12V....." Thanks again guys!!!

| I forgot to answer your question about the distributer. All you have to do on the ignition part is make the coil changes.

| Not a real big deal. 12V Battery of course. First thing replace the light bulbs. or you will have ruined good 6V bulbs plus possibly fog up the reflectors. Then replace the coil to 12V coil, or put a resistor in between the coil and hot wire comming from the ignition switch on your 6V coil. I am assuming you have the 12V regulator mounted on your 12V Generator. That's it you do not have to rewire anything.

| One side note dont stay on the 6 volt starter long or you will be replacing it too.

I'm sorry Kevin, but I have to strongly disagree with you. I have been running 12V on 6V starters on many units for over 20 years. A Starter and Generator rebuilder told me back in the fifties that the windings in a 6V starter are much heavier than the 12V starters. And will last longer than a 12V starter. It makes sense since you have to use heavier battery cables on 6V because it doesn't have the push that 12V does. I would guess that anyone that tells you differently is trying to sell you a starter.

| LOL No Del I smoked one just this year on my wd45 just this year after some one had converted the tractor over with a new starter I didn't think to look at the voltage on it. I just assumed it was 12 volt because that was the old battery in it along with the coil and new starter some one replaced. Boy did it turn fast too. Almost like an air starter on a truck.
So I based that more on experience is all.

| My starter guy told me the same thing Del. He's been doing it for 40 or 50 years, so I don't doubt what he says.
