john deere A do i need a resistor

switching an A over from mag to dist. my 60 has a resistor, but my other A does not. do i need one to help keep buring up the points?

if battery is 12 volts and coil is 6 volt or marked "12 volt external resistor required" (1 1/2 ohms across coil primary) yes you need a resistor. Resistance of the resistor should equal resistance of coil primary

if 6 volt battery with 6 volt coil, or 12 volt battery with a direct 12 volt coil (3 ohm primary) no, you do not need a resistor

60 probably has resistor bypass from switch or starter. Operates on 6 volts but bypasses resistor and applies 12 volts while starter is cranking the engine to give hotter starting spark.

There is no internal resistor in the coil. The difference is in the number of primary and secondary windings.
