I am having trouble decoding my M & M R type U serial #, I have looked at a few web sites but am still having trouble. serial # 0174893171 any help would be great.

Mike,
You've posted the engine serial number from a 1948 EE engine commonly found in an R tractor. If you look at the right side of the trans housing below the hand clutch lever you should see another serial tag for the tractor itself.
